Digital Cleanup Day is the perfect opportunity to declutter our data and devices. Find out how Diehl Metering is taking action and how you can get involved!
WHAT IS DIGITAL CLEANUP DAY?
Digital Cleanup Day is a global initiative designed to raise awareness about the environmental impact of digital technology. Held annually in mid-March, it encourages individuals, businesses, schools, and local authorities to take action by cleaning up their digital data and repurposing unused digital equipment to reduce electronic waste.
WHY DIGITAL WASTE MATTERS?
Digital waste refers to all the unused and unnecessary data stored in our devices and cloud systems—old files, duplicate documents, outdated software, and even forgotten emails. While we rarely notice them, these items accumulate and demand storage space, power, and infrastructure to keep running. What’s often overlooked is that digital waste also leads to real environmental cost.
Did you know that:
-
Storing 4 GB of data per year consumes around 2 kWh—enough energy to power a light bulb for 1,000 hours.
-
The ICT sector could account for 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
-
In 2025, the world will store over 180 zettabytes of data. A zettabyte is 1 billion terabytes—roughly the equivalent of 250 billion HD movies or all the books ever written, multiplied several million times.
Digital waste isn’t just about data: it’s also about devices. Hardware like laptops, smartphones, and tablets have short life cycles. Yet, recycling one laptop can save up to 280 kg of CO₂ and over 190,000 liters of water.
DIEHL METERING'S COMMITMENT TO DIGITAL CLEANUP
As part of our ongoing sustainability commitment, Diehl Metering is taking action to reduce digital waste and raise awareness among employees. In 2025, we extended our Digital Cleanup Day initiative to all our sites worldwide for the very first time. After three successful years at our Saint-Louis site, this company-wide rollout marks a key step in our Priority Program "Management of Resources".
Webinar: "Digital Cleanup Day - Data"
To raise awareness about digital pollution and promote best practices, we organized awareness webinars in four languages: French, German, Polish and English
The sessions explored how digital decluttering can:
-
Reduce data storage cybersecurity risks.
-
Free up disk and server space.
-
Lower CO2 emissions.
-
Extending the lifespan of digital devices.
-
Be integrated into daily routines through simple, actionable steps.
IT Equipment Collection: "Digital Cleanup Day - Reuse"
In parallel, our IT team collects unused electronic devices and ensures they are repaired and donated to relevant organizations, contributing to circular economy efforts.
Tracking & Sharing Results
We’re committed to measuring our impact and sharing outcomes across our global teams—because every small action counts when it comes to sustainability. Participation is on the rise! Colleagues from several sites have already embraced the challenge—and it’s just getting started. The webinar remains available anytime for all employees, as an e-learning module on our internal Learning World platform.
At Diehl Metering, sustainability means going beyond energy or water—it means acting on all fronts, including digital.
